Just yesterday I finished my first PC build, and everything is going smoothly. My only problem is that my internet speed in awful. Using an ethernet cable, my desktop is downloading at 2-10 Mbps. My laptop, on the other hand, has a download speed of 23 Mbps using a wireless connection. If I plug my ethernet cord into the laptop, the download speed shoots up to 100 Mbps.
So I know the problem has to do with my desktop itself, but any new internet drivers I install don't work for some reason, causing me to re-install the LAN driver that came with the MOBO setup disk. My MOBO is an ASUS Sabertooth Z97 Mark 1, running Windows 7. What can I do in order to fix my connection?

Hello JF Breton,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I can imagine the inconvenience you are experiencing and will certainly help you in the right direction to fix the issue.

Download and install the correct Ethernet Driver. To install the updated Ethernet Driver, do the following: Launch Internet Explorer or any other web browser; Browse to the official website of the manufacturer of the installed Ethernet card. For instance, if you use a Realtek Ethernet card, log-on to Realtek’s official website. May 30, 2012  'Realtek PCIe GBE Family Network Controller' Keeps Losing My Internet Connection Video. This problem seems to be associated with the on-board Realtek RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC. Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller keeps disconnecting - my fix. So I had this issue where my ethernet connection on my Lenovo B570 laptop keeps disconnecting about every couple of minutes and the link lights would turn off then it would reconnect. Issues with ethernet connection - internet slower than on WiFi I was getting acceptable speeds using WiFi but in an effort to see if I could get a faster connection I decided to run an ethernet cable (30m cat5e) from the router up through the ceiling and down into my room.

As per the issue description you are not getting the proper download/upload speed when connected to internet. There can be a number of reasons for slow Wi-Fi connection in Windows, some common issues that can cause these problems are:

  • Corrupted or incompatible drivers.
  • Missing updates.
  • Network connection settings.
  • Hardware or software problems.
  • Inappropriate distance from the router or obstruction.
  • Interference with other devices.

A wireless network router has a limited broadcast range. The further the computer is from the router, the weaker the broadcast signal. Solid objects, such as walls, metal furniture, and electrical appliances might interfere with the signal and decrease the usable range.

For testing purposes, move the computer closer to the router and minimize interference from electrical devices. If testing the connection with the computer near to the router proves that the wireless connection does not disconnect at a significant interval, you can move the computer to determine the range of the connection.
