  • Jan 06, 2008  I continue to run into issues with the xbox 360 hd dvd player every time I insert an hd concert dvd. I do not have any issues with the hd movies but have had issues with every concert inserted.
  • Dec 06, 2008  HDDVD player software for PC. Discussion in 'Xbox Forums' started by The Saint, Oct 4, 2008. I have powerDVD 7 ultra working on a decent vista machine with HDMI out using the 360 HD-DVD add on and HD DVD works OK. The Codecs that come with PDVD7 also allow me to watch BBC HD channel on astra (or playback recordings). Recommendations for.

What's even better is that, with some potentially illegal software, you can plug the Xbox 360's HD-DVD drive right into your Windows-based PC and enjoy high def movies on your computer!

Does anyone know how to update the firmware of an XBOX 360 HD-DVD Drive when used with an HTPC? I found some firmware updates that you download and burn to CD/DVD... but they are for updating the firmware via an XBOX. Anyone have any ideas how to update the firmware from a PC (specifically Windows Vista) ?

it would have to be through windows/microsoft update. there is a driver available, but it would probably have to be updated for it to work with newer release dvds.
try updating it through xbox live on a 360 and then using it on the pc.

That's just the drivers for the hardware. I believe there is actual firmware on the drive that needs to be updated as well, yes?

When you log into Xbox Live, there 'could' be an update for the dashboard depending upon how long you haven't connected to Live.
Now, once you are all set with the dashboard, throw in a HD-DVD into your drive. It will then connect to the network and probably get you an upgrade or two since you haven't done it yet.
That should take care of it all.

That's the complication, I am using this with an HTPC.. not an XBOX 360. I do not even own an XBOX. So, am I going to have to haul this thing over to a friend's house to update the firmware?

You might want to give it a shot.
Have you tried the HTPC area here on the forums? I'm sure somebody has had the same issue.

Which issues are you hoping to fix with this update?

the same things you'd fix by updating the firmware on any other hd dvd player. he'll be able to play all the new release hd dvd's and access the features on every disc.
being that its meant for use with the xbox 360 i would guess that this is the route to take. lug it to a friend's and bring along the installation disc that came with it in the box. update after putting a new release hd dvd in the tray. (should be and automatic prompt)

From what I understand, the HD-DVD drive doesn't need updating. The playback for any HD-DVD including new releases and extras are all handled within the software, like PowerDVD.

My first HD DVD add-on was defective, so I exchanged it after about 3 weeks. When I plugged the new one in, I didn't need to update the new add-on. So I would assume any update is really being applied to the 360 and not the add on.

this could be because they refurbished your defective drive and sent it back to you. or it could also be that there was not yet an update available and it came later, in the future, and you downloaded it then.
i also had a bad experience with my first add-on. the power supply connector broke off inside of the drive, a case of poor workmanship. and i had to be supplied with a totally new drive.
as a result, despite being told exactly what you said (though it came from an xbox support rep), i had to reinstall with the original install cd i had kept from the first (hardware drivers) AND update via xbox live (firmware update) before i was able to watch my movies normally. i think it is a case of both being software and hardware related. and i suspect that if he plans to use it on a pc, even though it is not officially supported by microsoft in this manner, the best way to keep it updated is through xbox live...as it is the way that it has been endorsed to stay up to date with the releases.

The 360 HD-DVD firmware patch is actually just putting a patch on the 360 itself, since all of the HD-DVD decoding is being done by the 360. Therefor, you don't need the firmware update if you are using the 360 HD-DVD drive on an HTPC. The only updates you need to worry about are to your HD-DVD playback software.

jzanitsch is correct: the update is for the player software only, so if you use the drive on a PC it won't make any difference. The drive firmware has yet to have any update.
If you are having trouble playing titles, give feedback to the authors of whatever software you ar using on your PC (after making sure you are running the latest version).

I have never updated any firmware on my 360 HD-DVD (w/HTPC) and it can read every single disc, including problematic ones. (I suspect it doesn't even have any firmware that can be updated.) However, PowerDVD properly decoding them is an entirely different matter.

For even more clarification: When people here talk about an HD DVD firmware update for the 360, the firmware sits and runs on the 360, not the drive. The drive just blindly reads data off the discs, and has never had a firmware update for it (at least not yet).

Over the weekend my copy of 'The Host' would not play on my HD-DVD add-on; as soon as I clicked on anything in the menu screen it would kick me back to the XBox 360 dashboard screen. This is the first movie that has given me playback issues, everything else (even 'Children of Men,' 'Hollywoodland' and 'The Good Sheperd') has played fine. I'm not a subscriber to XBox Live. Do I have to burn the latest HD-DVD update to the 360 on a CD-R for 'The Host' to play on my add-on drive? Doesn't the '300' HD-DVD combo come with the latest 360 update that uploads it automatically when putting the HD side into the add-on drive? Just checkin'.

That's been bugging me for awhile. It is NOT a firmware update (for the hd dvd drive) Firmware is information on the hardware itself. What they are doing is simply updating the software on the 360 (which may be considered the 360's firmware). I've been told on this forum multiple times that my trouble with power dvd was because I hadn't updated the hd dvd add on's firmware and even that that drive 'wouldn't work' with a PC less than a week ago.

Page 1 of 1: Using the Xbox 360 HD DVD Add-on Drive in Windows

Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on drive is a cheap way to start enjoying HD DVD movies. But the add-on drive has one feature that is most exciting for us PC users, one that Microsoft (for whatever reason) does not like to publicize (although they do provide drivers for it) - the Xbox 360 add-on drive can actually be used as an external HD DVD drive under Windows XP.

Xbox 360 Hd Dvd Player Software Download

This short guide shows you how to get HD DVD playback going on your Windows PC using the Xbox 360 add-on drive and PowerDVD Ultra. Before you start this guide, you might want to read our Is your PC Blu-ray/HD DVD Ready? guide to get to know the requirements for playback (which unfortunately, are quite extensive). Please note that the instructions are for Windows XP - Windows Vista has native support for the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive, and most of the instructions (especially about install UDF 2.5 reader drivers) are unnecessary - you may need to run Windows Update in Vista though.

Software you'll need:

  • PowerDVD Ultra 7.x or 8.x with Patch or any HD DVD player, including WinDVD Plus Blu-ray 9

Hardware you'll need:

Xbox 360 Hd-dvd On Pc

  • Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on drive

Instructions

Start Windows (do no install PowerDVD Ultra just yet). Connect your Xbox 360 HD DVD drive to the power supply, and then connect the supplied USB cable to the drive and your computer. The 'Found New Hardware' tray icon should show up (if not, make sure the power to the add-on drive is connected and that the USB cable is plugged in properly). The 'Found New Hardware Wizard' should show up shortly and you should select one of the 'Yes' options to use Windows Update to search for a device driver and press 'Next' to continue.

On the next screen, select 'Install the software automatically' and press 'Next' to continue.

Windows will locate and install the drivers for you and Windows should now recognise the drive as the 'Xbox 360 HD DVD Memory Unit/Device'. Click 'Finish' to close the 'Found New Hardware Wizard'.

If you insert a HD DVD disc into the drive and try to use Explorer to browse it, you will most likely get an error message about corrupt files or invalid format. If you use PowerDVD Ultra to play the HD DVD movie, it will load, however. To fix this problem, we need to install the UDF 2.5 reader driver. First, download the driver and extract the RAR file to a folder. Go to the folder and right click on the 'thdudf.inf' file, and select the 'Install' option.

You will then need to restart your computer and if you browse the HD DVD disc again in Explorer, it should now show the content of the disc, as well as the disc title (as opposed to just 'CD ROM').

With the drive plugged in and working, you can now install PowerDVD Ultra. As mentioned earlier, there are lots of requirements for HD DVD playback, and you need to read our Is your PC Blu-ray/HD DVD Ready? guide for more information. But to sum up, you need a fast CPU or a graphics card with high definition video acceleration. And if your monitor and video card are connected using DVI cables, you need both your video card and monitor to have HDCP support. And last but not least, you need graphics drivers that are supported by PowerDVD Ultra.

Without a HD DVD disc loaded, start PowerDVD Ultra. Press 'CTRL-C' or click on the 'Configuration' button on the right hand side of the playback controls. Go to the 'HD DVD' section. Here, you have several HD DVD options you can configure. The 'TwinFormat Preference' option specifies which format you wish to play if the disc has dual formats. The 'Display Mode Preference' option asks you how to display the picture - select 'HD' for full resolution playback, or one of the other options and selecting 'Down convert to SD'. The 'Use HD DVD hotkeys' options enable some keyboard shortcuts for HD DVD - enabling this will disable some of PowerDVD's own shortcut keys. And finally, 'Enable mouse in HD DVD' enables the mouse to be used to navigate HD DVD menus - when it is disabled, you can use your keyboard's arrow keys to navigate instead.

Now click on the 'Video' tab. You should select the 'Enable hardware acceleration' option, as this will help in decoding the video. There are also 'Audio' settings you can configureClick 'OK' to close the configuration window.

You can now insert a HD DVD movie and test playback. Hopefully it should play, especially after you have ensured you've met all the requirements. If you get a black screen, try restarting PowerDVD Ultra. If it still does not play, install a different set of graphics card drivers and keep an eye on this AVS Forum thread for more hints on playback.
